six sigma

Improve processes by reducing variation in inputs.

Six Sigma Insight

Measurement is the first step that leads to control and eventually to improvement. If you can’t measure something, you can’t understand it. If you can’t understand it, you can’t control it. If you can’t control it, you can’t improve it. by H. James Harrington
A personal view of six sigma

In many organisations, Six Sigma is seen as just another 'flavour of the month' quality improvement program; in my opinion, nothing could be further from the truth. They believe quite wrongly that Six Sigma brings nothing new, and that they have seen it all before, I disagree.

Total Quality Management (TQM) is often described as a cultural initiative as it focuses on the collaboration of various departments within a business. Its strategic approach focuses on incremental qualitative improvements and maintaining existing quality standards. On the other hand, Six Sigma is a methodology that aims to reduce process input variation as a means to improve quality by reducing process defects to near perfection, 3.4 defects per million opportunities.

Observing many companies in action, I am unable to point to a single instance in which stunning results were gotten without the active and personal leadership of the upper managers. by Joseph M. Juran
